ETHIOPIA

IN SEARCH OF A LEGEND

Ethiopia is one of the most genuine and surprising countries in Africa. Where millennial traditions and legends are mixed with high mountains, dense jungles, and one of the two mythical sources of the Nile.

Indiana Jones should have known it. The Tables of the Law, protected by the Lost Ark which he was seeking for so long, were not in Egypt. They were further up the Nile. They were hidden next to one of the sacred sources of the river. Who had put them there? Makeda herself, the Queen of Sheba, on her return from her journey to Jerusalem. And with them, the queen also brought, in her womb, a son of the great sage Solomon, Menelik, who after a few years would be the founder of the mythical kingdom of Ethiopia. This is no fantasy. Every year, the Tabot ‒ as the Ethiopians call the Tables of the Law ‒ is exhibited before tens of thousands of worshippers in the magical and enveloping festival of the Timkat.

Dr. Jones should have travelled to this corner of East Africa. He would have discovered the ruins of an ancient civilisation, Axum, which shared beauty and power with Ancient Rome. Without forgetting the fabulous mediaeval castles of the mountains of the Gondar and the marvellous Christian churches of Lalibela, cut out of the living rock long before the building of so many temples in the Western world.

None of this prevents Ethiopia from being a place where the feeling of deepest Africa still remains. Peoples such as the Hamer and the Mursi, who live in remote, lost valleys of the Oromo river, remain faithful to their ancestral customs and traditions. All of this is enveloped in spectacular Nature that can be contemplated and enjoyed in corners such as the Simien Mountains National Park, a habitat of baboons. And in the savannahs and jungles of Awash and the protected areas of Omo, Mago and Gambela, the territory of giraffes, lions and cheetahs.

Nature, culture, ethnology and safaris in 4x4 vehicles or on board a light aircraft. All of this can be enjoyed as a family or as a honeymooning couple. An Africa full of sensations, never to be forgotten.

The F&S ‘MUST SEES’

  • Mountains more than 4,000 metres high. Cotton terraces and valleys cut by unspoilt gorges. Lakes tinged with flamingo pink. Extraordinary Nature.
  • Experiencing the coffee ceremony in Lalibela. An ancient ritual in which the aromas of incense and toasted berries inundate the rooms to drive out evil spirits, in a vivid and colourful liturgy.
  • Enjoying the colourful market of Key Afer, where the Ari, Benna and Tse Mai show off their striking clothing with its geometric patterns and their coiffures adorned with rudimentary beads. Pure Africa.
  • Ancestral traditions and unfathomable rites, in a journey into the remotest past. Discovering the surprising conical and pyramidal huts of the Dorze people and the peculiar style of the Mursi.
  • A torchlight procession of white robes and dark faces, giving a spectral feeling to the churches of Lalibela outlined in the living rock, like the one dedicated to Saint George (Biet Ghiorgis).
IN THEIR OWN WORDS…
"Can you imagine staying in one of the best corners of Africa and enjoying a sunset in harmony with Nature?".
