Malta: when everyone else has left

PLAN YOUR TRIP

When they leave, you return. A saying that should be the rule for visiting Malta—a fantastic country when you avoid the high season

Avoid July and August to fully experience the historical and mythical magic of Malta, while still enjoying its beautiful nature. Once there, get ready to be surprised.
Its geographical position is crucial. Situated halfway between Sicily and Africa, Malta’s location has given it strategic importance for centuries. From here, the Crusaders sought to halt the advance of the Ottoman Empire.
Malta is not just one island. In fact, the two main islands are Malta and Gozo. There are also other notable islands such as Comino and Cominotto, along with smaller islets that appear and disappear with the tide.
Many corners of Malta are undeniably photogenic. Mdina is perhaps its most emblematic city. Remember the “King’s Landing” scenes from Game of Thrones? That’s Mdina.

History, legend, and a touch of cinema and cartoons.

Our route through Malta should include legendary places such as Tal Mixta, the cave where the nymph Calypso held Odysseus captive for seven years before he returned to Ithaca, according to Homer’s Odyssey.
In 1980, Robert Altman filmed Popeye in Malta. For this, he built a village that still stands today as a charming curiosity on the island.
The presence of the Knights of the Order of Malta brought structure and knowledge from their time, leaving behind beautiful cathedrals, palaces, and valuable paintings, including works by Caravaggio, who lived on the island while fleeing troubles in Italy.
The turquoise color of the sea is the ever-present complement that gives this destination its definitive charm—especially once the peak cruise season has ended.
